Speech Title: Building functional performance test cell design: case studies

Abstract: The objective of this communication is to present the design of several building functional performance test cells in which the author was involved. These test cells were conceived and built to analyse both lightweight building systems as well as the combination of lightweight and heavyweight building systems, and how these can be adapted to the specific conditions of temperate climates. The first one was created in 2000 and built in Azurém Campus of the University of Minho in Guimarães, in order to analyse non-conventional building systems. Some solar passive techniques were used and tested in this test cell, such as the use of natural materials as insulation and thermal mass, indirect gains, thermal zoning, translucent insulation in the north façade and a ventilated roof. The methodologies included thermal, natural light and acoustic monitoring and a life cycle analysis, from cradle to grave, comparing it with a reference building using conventional materials. In 2010, a membrane test cell facility was designed by the author and built in the same location, being in use till 2015. The purpose of this building was to perform qualitative and quantitative analysis of variable lightweight building systems, mostly using membranes. These systems were tested on its thermal, natural light and acoustic performance. Even if not an obvious choice, lightweight membranes can be adapted to fulfil the specific microclimatic circumstances of temperate climate regions. This facility has PVC-coated polyester covering the top, east and west sides. Some of the solar passive techniques used in the project are reflected in the north façade, which has a ventilated roof with a pneumatic translucent membrane and an anticlastic form membrane. A test cell was developed more recently to examine circular building systems. It was conceived based on reused maritime containers with exterior membrane coating. Variable panel designs that can be integrated into the interior layers as insulation and thermal mass were intended to be tested both qualitatively and quantitatively using this structure. It is possible to assess the thermal and acoustic characteristics of these panels made of different composite materials using byproducts and wastes.
